Taking care of your lips during winter

Winter can be a very frustrating time for your lips because all those cold breeze, freezing temperature and wind can take a heavy toll on this delicate part of your face. According to an article published in (health.clevelandclinic.org), “Lips are a special type of skin that is very thin and delicate — which means they really do require some extra care. Our lips dry out 10 times faster than the rest of the skin on our face, so it’s really important to use extra protection,” Dr. Piliang says. So, here are some must-do things to keep your lips okay this winter.

Don’t bite your lips

Even if it’s not winter, it’s not a good habit to bite or brush your lips as it will only worsen the condition of your lips. If you bite your lips during winter, your lips moisture will go away and the cells will be damaged which will eventually put your lips in jeopardy.

Don’t lick your lips

If you feel that your lips are dry, you may feel tempted to lick those. Do not make this mistake. “Once you put saliva on your lips it actually makes them dry out faster, making your lips even more dry overall,” Dr. Piliang says. “Plus, the enzymes that are in saliva that are meant to digest food are irritating to the lips.” So, this is a big ‘no’.

Apply lip balm at night

Include this in your night-time routine from today. Everyday before going to bed apply lip balm on your lips to keep them hydrated and okay. “Many people sleep with their mouths open. Eight hours of breathing in and out through your mouth can seriously dry out your lips — and lip balm can help a great deal, Dr. Piliang says.

Finally, go for a lip balm that’s ointment-based as it will offer you so many benefits including locking in the moisture and helping you to heal cracks and splits.
