Is using sanitizer the way to go?

During this time of the coronavirus when everyone is terrified of being infected with the virus, it is imperative that you keep your hands sanitized all the time in order to avoid any risks. With a view to doing that many people are using sanitizers which are in high demand now in the market. Well, there is nothing bad in using sanitizers, but at the same time we should remember that our indifference after using sanitizer may invite serious consequences for us, the worst case being the threat to life. Here are some points to keep in mind while using sanitizer:

It contains alcohol, which is combustible

Just a few days ago a young doctor from Uttara died because almost 90 percent of his body got burnt and he could not sustain the burn injuries. Even his wife was also seriously injured. It all happened because the doctor lit up a cigarette after using sanitizer in his hands that resulted in fire. It is mentionable that sanitizers contain alcohol, which is highly combustible. So, if you use sanitizer and then go nearer to a fire source, be it naked or open fire, then there is every possibility that you will catch fire and threaten your life. This is suicidal!

Other toxic chemicals

Many companies are marketing scented sanitizers. These are more dangerous than others because it’s likely that those will contain toxic chemicals which are essential for creating the scent. It may contain phthalates, kind of endocrine disrupters that could alter genital development. Again there may be traces of parabens, which are widely used to preserve other ingredients. This ingredient is not good as well. To avoid further risk, read the label as every company is required to disclose the ingredients used in the product in the packet or bottle.

FDA warns against using sanitizer having methanol

Methanol is another dangerous ingredient that may create problems for you. According to a statement by FDA, U.S food and drug administration, it is advisable not to use any hand containing methanol (wood alcohol), a substance that can be toxic when absorbed through the skin or ingested. They further explained that methanol is not an acceptable ingredient for hand sanitizers and should not be used owing to its toxic effects.

After reading all these the decision is yours whether you want to use sanitizer and other alcohol based preparations or not. But if you ask us – then we will suggest you to stay away from sanitizers. The best way to defeat coronavirus is to wash your hands with soapy water at a regular interval for at least 20 seconds.
